This week I was reading about a woman, Mary Magdeline and how she fit into the life of Jesus Christ. Mary’s first encounter was actually a pretty scary one with Jesus. The bible tells us in Luke 8:1-3 that Jesus had casted out 7 demons from Mary. That’s pretty crazy right, seven demons! That would make me want to say that “I’m in” to following Jesus.
We’ll talk more about the seven demons later… I really want to talk about what Jesus healed her from.
It was her hurting, suffering, and pain.
We may not have seven demons inside us right now, but it might feel like we do. It may feel like our life is hopeless or worthless. That the struggle we are going through right now can not be healed by anything or anyone. I think that is where Mary was before she met Jesus.
Let’s fast-forward to the cross. Mark 15:40 tells us that Mary Magdeline was looking at a dying Jesus on the cross after everyone else had left His side.
Where are the twelve disciples?
Where are the people Jesus healed during his ministry on earth?
Mary was the only person to stay beside Jesus while He died on the cross. Which tells us that their relationship was strong. She did not hide her love for Jesus even in His worst moments.
It gets so much better, watch what happens next!
Mark 16:9-11 says, Now when he rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons. She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept. But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it.
Imagine being the first person to see Jesus after He rose from the dead. You had just watched a mocked, bloody, beaten Jesus die. Then on the third day you got to see a beautiful, resurrected King who beat death for our sins.
Mary’s relationship with Jesus, which started with Him healing her; allowed her to be the first to witness the most miraculous comeback any of us will ever know.
A true authentic relationship with Jesus is what will grow as you get closer to Him.
Mary understood something that not many of us get. She understood that if you want all of Jesus, then you have to give all of yourself to Jesus.
As you walk throughout this upcoming week, I want to encourage you that Jesus is doing His part for a relationship with you. Just like every relationship, it takes effort on both sides. This means reading your bible, praying, and spending some moments that are just between you and Jesus.
It will change your life!
